Visiting Edinburgh Castle - What to See & Do in This Amazing Castle

Edinburgh Castle sits spectacularly on an old Volcanic Plug and is the place to see Scotland’s Crown Jewels.

A few weeks ago I visited Edinburgh Castle and I hope you enjoy the video I filmed during my visit (above), which you can also see on my YouTube channel.

I cover most of the places you should see while you’re exploring the castle, and I would give yourself at least two hours. Tickets can sell out on the day* so make sure you book online a few days before you plan to visit. If you’d like further information about visiting the castle, please check out my article - Visiting Edinburgh Castle.

If you can, try and get there for the One o’Clock Gun. It’s fired everyday (except Sundays) and is well worth seeing.

Located at the top of the Royal Mile, itʼs staggering to realise, that not only has there been a castle here since the 12th century, but that itʼs also built on an extinct volcano! Highlights include Scotlandʼs Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, the 12th-century St Margaretʼs Chapel, the Scottish National War Memorial, the Regimental Museums and The Royal Palace. Plus amazing views of the city. Take your time - there’s lots to see!

Audio guides are available. One of the most popular daily events (except Sundays) is the firing of the ‘One o’Clock Gun’ from the Mills Mount Battery. It’s fired at 1pm (hence the name!) and was originally used by ships in the Firth of Forth to set their maritime clocks.

There are two places to eat at the castle - The Tea Rooms (afternoon tea & light meals) and the Redcoat Cafe (soups, sandwiches & hot food including takeaway). Excellent gift shops.

The Castle is open daily, except for the 25th & 26th December.

*Book online, in advance, for discounted prices and to guarantee entry - it gets very busy in summer!
